HOTEL of the week; JURYS INN, CORK, IRELAND.

Byline: SARAH WHITFIELD KING

WHERE AND WHY

Located in the Anderson's Quay district in the heart of Ireland's second city, this three-star hotel overlooks the River Lee and is easy walking distance from the main shopping centre, bus station and restaurants and bars. Rooms are comfortable with plenty of space for a family of two adults and two children. Downstairs there's a friendly bar with chatty staff alongside a restaurant and an all-day coffee bar.

ON THE MENU

For dinner there's a choice of a two courses for [euro]17.95 (PS14.60) or three courses for [euro]20.95 (PS17). Starters include crispy crumbled Brie with cranberry dip and toasted muesli bread. Or you could opt for homemade soup and freshly-baked bread. Among the main courses were duck legs in an orange-flavoured jus and a salmon fillet with prawn tagliatelle in a garlic and cream sauce. The gorgeous sticky toffee pudding and caramel sauce or a lemon cheesecake with winter berries are both tempting for pud.

WHILE YOU'RE THERE

Take a bus to Blarney Castle. Five miles away from Cork City in an attractive little village, the castle is set in well-maintained gardens with on-site refreshments and a restored stable yard with old farm machinery. Tradition claims that if you kiss the famous stone you will for ever have the 'gift of the gab'. Or you can simply take in the wonderful views. Back in Cork, don't miss the market on Grand Parade, with stalls selling traditional Irish goodies. If you get peckish pop up to the cafe on the first floor which serves great seasonal food overlooking the busy market.
