HOT OFF THE PRESS ... STUDENT WRITING CENTER FOR WINDOWS! NOW AVAILABLE FROM THE LEARNING COMPANY

FREMONT, Calif., Nov. 8 /PRNewswire/ -- The Learning Company (NASDAQ: LRNG) today announced the release of Student Writing Center for Windows, an easy-to-use writing and publishing program designed especially for students, ages 10 - Adult. The program combines full- featured word processing and easy desktop publishing with unique student features -- including a bibliography maker, grammar tips, writing tips, over 150 graphics and a journal with a password. Pre-formatted reports, newsletters, journals, letters and signs make it effortless for students to create a variety of high-quality documents quickly and easily. Student Writing Center is compatible with all IBM PCs running Microsoft Windows 3.1, and has a suggested price of $79.95.
Used in more than 30,000 schools nationwide, The Learning Company's writing and publishing programs are designed to meet the needs of students and teachers. According to the 1993 K-12 Market Study Report published by the Software Publishers' Association, educators believe that tools like Student Writing Center and its younger age counterpart, The Children's Writing & Publishing Center, are a very important part of a student's future and a necessary part of the curriculum both at home and at school.
"Parents, teachers and students told us that they wanted a full-featured word processor that had the 'right' power features for them and not the complexity of business word processors," said Bill Dinsmore, president and CEO of The Learning Company. "We designed Student Writing Center with those 'right' features to give students the ideal tool to better express themselves and enjoy the process of writing."
 Special Student Features
Each of the pre-formatted documents has unique features. For example, the report document type has one column of text and gives students the ability to add footnotes, a title page and a bibliography. The newsletter document allows students to have a masthead and multiple columns of text, with or without lines between the columns. The journal is used for writing diarylike entries, organized by date and can even be kept secret by using the password option. The sign and letter documents include over 30 specially designed borders and letterhead options. In addition to the word-processing features like a spell checker, thesaurus, endnotes and footnotes, the program offers students a set of built-in tools to assist in creating their documents.
The Bibliography Maker helps students automatically format a list of source materials used in their research. It does most of the work for the student -- alphabetizing, organizing the information in each entry and adding the correct punctuation. Once the student types the information into a simple form, the program formats it according to Modern Language Association standards and displays it on a separate page at the end of the document. There are over 20 reference types, including books, encyclopedias, dictionaries, magazines, newspapers, films, lectures and interviews for a student to select in making the bibliography.
For helpful information on how to write a particular kind of document like a book report, research paper, short story, news story, resume or cover letter, students can reference the online writing tips. Student Writing Center also has grammar tips that include guidelines on punctuation, capitalization, plurals, abbreviations, numbers and the definitions of commonly confused words. The writing and grammar tips are based on the best-selling student writing handbooks, "Writers INC" and "Write Source 2000," published by Write Source Educational Publishing House.
The Title Page Maker helps students create a cover page that introduces the document and usually includes the title, writer's name and date. The format and contents of the title page are suggested by the program but students can change them to anything they want, including adding graphics. This is accomplished without affecting the page numbering and other criteria the student has set up.
In addition to the password option, the journal document features a perpetual calendar, a search capability to use in finding key words, and a print option for printing one journal entry or a range of entries.
Full-Featured Word Processing and Easy Desktop Publishing
In addition, the program offers full-featured word processing including: spelling checker with over 100,000 words; thesaurus with over 600,000 words; headers and footers; footnotes and endnotes; automatic save; word count option; import and export of ASCII and RTF files; and import of files from The Children's Writing & Publishing Center. An easy-to-use icon bar gives immediate access to the major features and tools of the program, allowing students to print, save files, change fonts, or cut and paste with just a click of the mouse.
Student Writing Center contains more than 120 clip art pictures and five TrueType fonts in a variety of styles and sizes. The graphics can be resized, cropped and flipped and will still remain sharp even when stretched and scaled. The program also imports all WMF, PCX and BMP picture files. Other desk-top publishing features include easy page layout with multiple columns, automatic text wrap around graphics, page preview, text boxes, and borders and shading.
Here's what parents and teachers say about Student Writing Center for Windows:
"I think Student Writing Center is a tremendous product. The grammar and writing tips and the bibliography maker are wonderful tools right at your fingertips," said Randy Allen, parent and IBM/Technology & Learning magazine's Teacher of the Year.
Parents agree. "With other word processors, it's really hard for kids to format all the different types of documents -- reports, bibliographies, letters, newsletters -- and to remember all the grammar rules," said Jamie Wooster. "But with Student Writing Center, the children still do all the work, but the program shows them how to do it. And they don't get frustrated by having to look it up in a book or manual; it's all right in front of them."
 Technical Information:
The program requires Windows 3.1, 2MB memory (4MB recommended), a hard drive (with 8MB free), an 80386 or better microprocessor, a keyboard and mouse. It supports VGA or better and all Windows-compatible printers.
