HOSPITAL HEALTH SCARE FOR DEFENDING CHAMP WILLIAMS; SNOOKER WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP.

Byline: HECTOR NUNNS

DEFENDING world champion Mark Williams was taken to hospital with chest pains last night.

The Welshman (right) went to the tournament office straight after the first eight frames against David Gilbert.

Williams, who trailed 5-3 and is due to resume the best-of-25 frames contest this morning, complained of feeling unwell.

An on-call event doctor was consulted, and together with wife Jo and son Kian, Williams, 44, went to the Northern General Hospital in Sheffield.

He tweeted: "In A&E, could be here for a while, couldn't stick the chest pains no more. Lucky there wasn't more frames to play. Better to get checked out, safe than sorry."

Earlier Tamworth's Gilbert, 37, pulled off some timely clearances as breaks of 61, 61, 52 and 88 saw him claim the early advantage.

Meanwhile, Mark Selby faces a battle today against former cabbie Gary Wilson.

The three-time world champion goes into this morning's final session of his Betfred World Championship last-16 clash trailing 9-7. World No.2 Selby, 35, has endured a tough season and came to the Crucible looking to boost his confidence and get on an early roll. After losing the first session 5-3 Selby several times looked poised yesterday to regain control against Geordie Wilson - making only his second appearance in Sheffield.

Selby edged into a 7-6 lead after efforts of 120 and 72, but Wilson, 33, responded magnificently - grabbing the last three frames of the afternoon.
