HOSPITAL ASSOCIATION OF PENNSYLVANIA COORDINATES HURRICANE ANDREW
 RELIEF EFFORT FOR FLORIDA COUNTERPARTS
HARRISBURG, Pa., Sept. 4 /PRNewswire/ -- Pennsylvania's hospitals have launched a relief effort for their counterparts in Florida ravaged by Hurricane Andrew.
The effort is being coordinated by The Hospital Association of Pennsylvania (HAP).
Working with the South Florida Hospital Association, HAP compiled a list of the most urgently needed medical supplies. The list also details items most needed by citizens of the stricken area.
HAP appealed to its 255 member hospitals to donate whatever they could to the effort. Shipment of the supplies is being coordinated by the Brother's Brother Foundation, a Pittsburgh-based international aid organization.
The appeal also included a call for health care professionals, particularly registered nurses, to volunteer their time and skills to aid victims of the storm. Some hospitals in the affected area have been damaged so severely they have been forced to close; others remain open but face serious hardships in maintaining operations.
Within 24 hours of the appeal, Brother's Brother reported receiving pledges from 20 hospitals of donations including baby formula, diapers, batteries, medical supplies, medications and food.
In the same time frame, the South Florida Hospital Association reported contact from health professionals including nurses, biomedical engineers and emergency medical technicians volunteering to travel to Florida to help in the relief effort.
The Hospital Council of Western Pennsylvania is conducting a similar relief effort.
