1940 During the week of the Dunkirk evacuation 70 years ago, Pont L'Eveque and Godiva warmed up for their victories in the Derby and Oaks respectively. Pont L'Eveque breezed home in the Longleat Stakes at Salisbury, and Godiva hacked up in the Oaks Trial at Hurst Park. Owen Tudor, the 1941 Derby victor, made a winning debut at Salisbury while hundreds of thousands of soldiers were being rescued from the French beach as the German army advanced.

Who am I? Being a rig I was different from most other horses anyhow, but my record and zest for racing was what made me stand out the most. I raced 121 times, winning 20 races and was placed second or third in a further 24 races, picking up just under pounds 500,000 in prize-money. And I simply loved Haydock. As a nine-year-old I was a whisker away from winning a Group 1 sprint, and five days later, I returned to the track to record the final success in my long career.
