Silicon is the eighth most common element in the universe by mass, but very rarely occurs as the pure free element in nature. It is more widely distributed in dusts, sands, planetoids and planets as various forms of silicon dioxide (silica) or silicates. In Earth's crust, silicon is the second most abundant element after oxygen, making up 27.7 per cent of the crust. Silicon has many industrial uses. 1991 Three prominent jockeys - Ted Walsh, Len Lungo and Stan Moore - all scored the first wins of their training careers during this month 20 years ago. Former top amateur Walsh got off the mark with Roc De Prince in the Thyestes Chase at Gowran Park; Lungo opened his account with Cumbrian Ceilidh in a maiden hurdle at the course that was still called Edinburgh; and Moore did so with Dramatic Event in a handicap hurdle at Windsor.
