Wit and wisdom 'The business of training racehorses has gone the same way as prostitutes.

John Porter, who began training in 1863, won 23 Classics including seven Derbys.

His best horses were Triple Crown heroes Ormonde and Flying Fox, while La Fleche won the 1,000 Guineas, Oaks and St Leger. Known as the Blond Arrow, he scored 216 goals in 282 league games between 1953 and 1964. Nat Lofthouse hit 285 league goals from 452 appearances for home-town club Bolton, becoming the Lion of Vienna when netting twice in England's 3-2 victory in Austria in 1952, among a haul of 30 international goals in 33 games.
