HONEYWELL ESTABLISHES INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY DEFENSE FUND
Company Will Assist Small Businesses Defend Patents Against
Foreign Competitors Using Proceeds from Case Against Minolta
MINNEAPOLIS, Feb. 10 /PRNewswire/ -- Honeywell (NYSE: HON) will lead an effort to establish a defense fund for small business owners and entrepreneurs to protect their patents and other intellectual property against international competitors, the company said today.
Honeywell will launch the fund using $1 million from $96.3 million in damages the company will receive from the Minolta Camera Co. A jury in federal court in New Jersey Friday ordered Minolta to pay the damages for infringing Honeywell patents in developing a line of automatic fos? cameras.
The Minneapolis company will approach other U.S. technology corporations to participate in the defense fund. The plan is for a $10 million fund that would be replenished from legal fees awarded or negotiated as patent disputes are resolved, according to Christopher J. Steffen, Honeywell executive vice president and chief financial and administrative officer.
Steffen said Honeywell was satisfied with the outcome of its case against Minolta, which culminated a six-year, $14 million effort to be compensated. But he noted smaller corporations or individuals could not have stayed the course. "A small business or entrepreneur would not have had the resources to follow through as we did with Minolta. If individuals or small businesses cannot afford to protect their inventions, the United States may never benefit from their knowledge, ingenuity and products," Steffen said. Honeywell hopes to attract million dollar donations from other major technology companies, he said.
"When our technology is lost either through piracy or through inadequate compensation from royalties, all of American industry loses," Steffen said.
Honeywell is a global controls company that provides products, systems and services for homes and buildings, industry, and aviation and space. The company employs 58,000 people worldwide and had 1990 sales of $6.3 billion.
Honeywell, based in Minneapolis, has offices in 90 countries on six continents. International joint ventures include an ownership position in Yamatake-Honeywell of Japan, a country with which Honeywell has had positive trade relations since the 1920s.
