HONDA NO. 2 AUTO EXPORTER IN 1993

TORRANCE, Calif., Aug. 5 /PRNewswire/ -- American Honda Motor Co. Inc. was the nation's second largest exporter of automobiles in the first six months of 1993, according to figures recently released by the American Automobile Manufacturers' Association. Only General Motors Corp. shipped more domestically produced automobiles abroad from the United States.
Through June, American Honda had exported 27,792 U.S.-manufactured Accord and Civic automobiles. The Honda Accord, with 17,355 units sent overseas, ranked as the top single model to be exported from the United States.
American Honda currently exports automobiles to 23 nations around the world, up from 18 in 1992. Although Japan and Taiwan rank as the top two markets for American Honda's export program, other nations including Israel, Australia, Brazil and several European countries receive U.S.-manufactured Honda automobiles. Nations added to the U.S. export program 1993 include Argentina, the Bahamas, Chile, Guatemala and Panama.
U.S.-made Honda automobiles were the top-selling import brand in Japan for the first half of 1993, registering 15,912 sales. The Accord Wagon has been especially well received by Japanese consumers, and the Accord is the top-selling U.S. model in that market.
Also meeting with excellent acceptance in Japan has been the new Civic Coupe, which was included in the export program this year. Both the Accord Wagon and Civic Coupe were designed and developed by Honda in the United States, and along with the Accord Coupe are manufactured exclusively in North America.
Export models of the Accord Sedan, Coupe and Wagon are produced at the Honda of America Manufacturing auto plant in Marysville, Ohio. Export models of the Civic Coupe and Sedan are built at the Honda auto plant in East Liberty, Ohio.
