HONDA MANUFACTURES 3 MILLIONTH CAR IN AMERICA

MARYSVILLE, Ohio, Jan. 21 /PRNewswire/ -- Associates at Honda of America Manufacturing (HAM) had two reasons to celebrate today as their 3 millionth car was produced at the Marysville Auto Plant.
Not only does the 3 millionth car represent Honda's deepening roots as an American automaker, the 3 millionth car is also a special 10th Anniversary model of the Accord Sedan.
This commemorative edition of the popular Accord model highlights the 10th Anniversary of Honda's auto production in America. The first Honda Accord was produced at the Marysville Auto Plant on Nov. 1, 1982.
In addition to producing three million cars, HAM associates have also produced about two million engines since the Anna Engine Plant began production in 1985.
The 10th Anniversary Accord debuts at Honda dealers in mid-February. More information about the 10th Anniversary Accord, including specific features and pricing will be released on February 4 when Honda will spotlight the car at the Chicago Auto Show.
Since Honda began auto production in America more than 10 years ago, the company's Ohio production operations have been a major economic benefit to American workers and the local economies of cities and towns throughout the country.
In the last 10 years, HAM has purchased $10.1 billion of original equipment (OE) parts and raw materials from domestic suppliers. In fiscal year 1993 (year ending March 1993), HAM will purchase $2.9 billion from 256 domestic OE suppliers.
About 10,200 jobs have been created at HAM's four production plants in west central Ohio. These jobs generate a weekly payroll of $7.7 million and produced a total of $154 million in payroll taxes for 1992. An additional 20,000 jobs have been created by HAM's suppliers in Ohio and throughout the nation.
HAM has paid more than $64 million in personal property and real estate taxes to local communities since auto production began in 1982, including more than $14 million in 1992. As the four plants have grown and expanded, HAM's philosophy of continuous improvement has resulted in the installation of new production equipment and technology at each plant as new models are developed. In fact, the Marysville Auto Plant has produced more new models in its first 10 years of auto production than any other U.S. auto plant -- 10 different models in all.
Today, HAM's growth continues in production of export models. In 1992, Honda exported more than 55,000 Ohio-built Accord and Civic autos overseas, including the Accord Coupe, Accord Wagon and Civic Coupe which are made only in North America. To date, HAM has produced more than 100,000 cars for export to 18 countries. The HAM-built Accord continues as the best-selling U.S. export car, a ranking it has held since 1988.
