HONDA INTENDS TO ENTER PPG INDY CAR WORLD SERIES

DETROIT, Jan. 7 /PRNewswire/ -- American Honda Motor Co., Inc. (NYSE: HMC) today announced at the North American International Auto Show that it intends to participate in the PPG Indy Car World Series at the beginning of the 1994 season. A new subsidiary company, Honda Performance Development, Inc. has been established to supply engines for a "flagship" Indy car team, with testing beginning in 1993.
According to American Honda Executive Vice President Thomas G. Elliott, the company's Indy car program will have two major objectives: to provide a valuable marketing opportunity to Honda in North America, and to give valuable experience to Honda's U.S. engineers and technicians.
"Challenges have always been important to the growth and success of Honda," said Elliott. "Indy car racing is this type of challenge. Participation in Indy car racing can serve as a catalyst that ties together our vast, growing sales, production and R&D operations in North America. Certainly, it will help us expand our R&D and engineering capabilities in the U.S. and provide Honda with distinct marketing opportunities."
Honda Performance Development, Inc. will manage the Indy car engine program. The new company will be based in Valencia, Calif., 30 miles north of Los Angeles. It will serve as a technical operations center and will oversee Honda's participation in the Indy car racing series. Elliott will serve as president of Honda Performance Development, Inc. in addition to his responsibilities as executive vice president of American Honda.
To staff this expansion of its U.S. racing activities, Honda plans to recruit experienced American personnel from within Honda and the motorsports community. Plans also call for association with a "flagship" Indy car team with an announcement expected in the near future.
"We believe that the more than 16,000 Honda employees in sales, manufacturing and R&D in the U.S. and Canada will identify with the excitement of this new challenge, as well as our dealers, suppliers and our customers," Elliott said. "Indy car racing continues to grow in popularity, and is the premier motorsports series in North America. It is obviously the perfect place for American Honda to compete as we continue to grow and develop in North America.
