HONDA ACCORD WAS TOP CONSUMER CHOICE IN '95; HONDA TOPS TOYOTA AS #1 IMPORT NAMEPLATE

TORRANCE, Calif., March 11 /PRNewswire/ -- The Honda Accord was the most popular car among individual buyers in 1995 according to data compiled by The Polk Company, an independent research corporation.

The data is based on new car registrations for the 1995 calendar year. In evaluating the data, The Polk Company separates individual consumer purchases from fleet purchases to provide a better indication of the most popular vehicles with individual buyers.

"It's nice to post the big year-end sales numbers on January 1, but the retail registrations mean the most to us and to our bottom line," said Dick Colliver, senior vice president, Honda Sales Division. "You might be able to advertise your sales number, but you can't put it in the bank."

Polk's records indicate 314,612 Accords were registered to individual buyers during 1995, well ahead of second-place Saturn at 283,181. The Toyota Camry at 281,038, Honda Civic/Civic del Sol at 280,805 and Ford Escort at 223,619, round out the top five. The Ford Taurus, the sales leader when fleet sales are added, posted retail registrations of 186,377 according to Polk.

In addition, Honda (608,011) again topped Toyota (595,618) among import nameplate car sales to individuals. They were followed by Nissan (372,306), Mazda (176,427) and Mitsubishi (136,858).
