HOMES CHILD ABUSE: THIRD MAN CHARGED.

Byline: LUKE TRAYNOR

A THIRD person is to be prosecuted as part of an investigation into historical child abuse at care homes.

National Crime Agency detectives yesterday announced they had charged Peter Steen, 74, with offences committed up to 36 years ago.

Steen is accused of three counts of actual bodily harm and four charges of child cruelty.

He is alleged to have abused four boys and one girl, aged 13 to 16, between 1978 and 1986. Steen, of Wrexham, will appear before magistrates next month. He is the third person to be charged under Operation Pallial, which is looking at alleged offences committed against children from 1953 to 1995 at care homes across North Wales.

These include the infamous Bryn Estyn children's home in Wrexham where seven former workers were convicted. Victims said Jimmy Savile was a regular visitor. It was alleged that gang rapes, beatings and strip searches of young boys took place there on a daily basis.
