HOME SHOPPING PRIME TIMERS MARK SECOND ANNIVERSARY
ST. PETERSBURG, Fla., May 19 /PRNewswire/ -- Home Shopping

Network, Inc. (NYSE: HSN) announced today that its highly successful Prime Timers employment program celebrated its second anniversary in March. The innovative program focuses on actively recruiting, training and employing workers age 55 and older to fill essential positions as part-time network representatives.
In addition to attaining solid standing in HSN's corporate structure, the Prime Timers program has won recognition from outside agencies. In 1991, the program won the Silver Hat award from the Pinellas Private Industry Council of Pinellas County. It was chosen as the 1990 recipient of the Florida American Legion's National Employ the Older Worker citation out of a field of 42 employers nominated statewide.
The Prime Timers program has shown steady growth since its inception. Prime Timers are recruited in various ways, including at job and health fairs. Once individuals are accepted into the Prime Timers program, they participate in a paid company training program.
People from virtually every walk of life are among the Prime Timers staff, including former business executives, former teachers and law enforcement officers and people entering the work force for the first time. For many Prime Timers joining the program, it is their first exposure to working with computers. Although some new Prime Timers might begin the program with computer fright, training and reminders that ability is ageless quickly turns most of them into well-qualified employees.
While the Prime Timers Program is serious business, its workers enjoy well-rounded lives beyond the job. So much so that the program's cohesive spirit has led to the formation of a club called Prime Timers Social Club (PTS), which meets after work. PTS organizes leisure and social activities for its members.
Edward M. Vaughn, senior vice president of human resources, said, "We now have 300 active Prime Timers. The program has an extremely low turnover rate, and our Prime Timers routinely demonstrate a solid work ethic.
"The program fills Home Shopping's need for a trained, reliable part-time staff which also can be called into service during high- volume sales periods, as temporary help during vacations and at other times when additional staffing is necessary." Vaughn points out that the program offers employment flexibility to workers who typically prefer part-time job opportunities.
Roy M. Speer, chairman and chief executive officer, said, "HSN's Prime Timers perform a vital role. They are eager to learn new skills and, at the same time, adhere to an old-fashioned work ethic. We're proud of them. They're assets to our company."
