ST. PETERSBURG, Fla., Jan. 13 /PRNewswire/ -- Home Shopping Network, Inc. (NYSE: HSN) announced today that it plans to introduce TSM (Television Shopping Mall), a national electronic retailing network designed to position traditional retailers, catalogers and consumer product manufacturers on the express ramp to America's electronic highway. A summer launch is anticipated.
With the communication industry and the business world abuzz with heady expectations of the interactive shopping wave of tomorrow, TSM will drive the future into the present in a combination televised shopping mall and electronic catalog instantly accessible with the flip of a TV switch. From the comfort of their homes, TSM's shoppers will visually step into marketplaces brimming with merchandise. Moderate to upscale, products will range from household items, hardware and apparel to food, lifestyle goods and electronic items.
TSM is designed to accommodate 35 participants for 70 two-hour shows per week. Remaining hours will be devoted to Home Shopping Spree, HSN's overnight service. Initial distribution is expected to be to 3 million cable households and 20 million broadcast TV households, with a goal of reaching 30 million cable households within five years. Shows will be live, taped or a combination of both. Contracts with TSM programmers will be for one year initially, with options to renew agreements for longer periods.
TSM will have its own look, personality and identity, separate and distinct from HSN's Home Shopping Club. Merchandisers will create their own TSM stores, each achieving desired individual looks and sensibilities.
As the TV mall developer, HSN will offer a variety of services to businesses on TSM. Support packages with such choices as use of studios, sales hosts and order taking are among services available.
 Advantages All Around
TSM will offer viewers greater choice of at-home shopping venues and products. Further, TSM promises a cost effective way for retailers to explore a creative, exciting new sales medium.
Cable operators will obtain immediate and financially rewarding participation in a new form of transactional television and promote subscriber retention.
Among TSM benefits for catalogers are opportunities for adaptations of catalogs and access to real time customer reactions, as well as greater sensory impact -- sight, sound, image, motion -- and new niche opportunities.
Gerald F. Hogan, president and chief executive officer of HSN, said, "It is appropriate that the pioneer of television shopping is also a trailblazer on the innovative electronic highway.
"I'm confident that TSM will offer satisfaction and value to consumers and a cost effective means for marketers to explore a new sales medium while benefiting from new revenue streams. TSM will open new opportunities for HSN and, at the same time, allow more efficient use of the company's facilities and services. We are eager to launch this exciting new venture."
