HOME SAVINGS OF AMERICA OFFERS CHECK IMAGING SERVICE TO CUSTOMERS

IRWINDALE, Calif., Sept. 2 /PRNewswire/ -- Home Savings of America, the nation's largest savings institution and principal subsidiary of H.F. Ahmanson & Co. (NYSE: AHM), announced that it is offering check imaging to its more than 700,000 checking customers nationwide.
The check imaging system, which can print and photocopy up to 18 check images on a single 8-1/2 by 11-inch page, eliminates the need to return customer's canceled checks with their monthly statement.
Home Savings is the first major financial institution in California to offer the check imaging service.
In a pilot program earlier this year, Home Savings offered check imaging to more than 10,000 customers and employees nationwide, who expressed a 97 percent approval rating of the new service.
"Statement imaging is a significant breakthrough that will make it easier and more convenient for our customers to review their monthly checking account statements," said Ed McGrath, executive vice president and director of the Retail Services Division.
The new technology benefits both the customer and Home Savings, added McGrath. Customers can more easily store, locate and verify copies of their checks, which are printed in numerical order on the page. When the check imaging system is fully phased in, Home Savings projects that it will reduce the time it takes to process checks by 80 percent.
While check imaging only reproduces the front side of checks, customers can request up to four free copies of checks per month, front and back, should they need a copy.
New checking customers at Home Savings will automatically receive the check imaging service at no charge as part of their checking account. Current checking customers can sign up for the new service at no additional charge.
Home Savings of America, with assets of $50 billion and deposits of over $38 billion, is the nation's largest savings institution. The company serves more than 2.5 million customers from 367 savings branches in nine states and 88 mortgage lending offices in 13 states.
