HOLLAND AMERICA LINE'S NEW 'ART OF CRUISING' VIDEO
HIGHLIGHTS COMPANY'S HISTORY AND STYLE OF CRUISING
SEATTLE, Dec. 20 /PRNewswire/ -- Holland America Line's new video, "The Art of Cruising," highlights the company's 119-year history and its tradition of excellence, the company said today.
The video presents the legacy of the company's past, setting the stage for the introduction of three new luxury cruise ships over the next three years.
"It's an emotional statement of the company's history and its status today as a world-class cruise line," said Rich Skinner, director, public relations. "This video brings our heritage into focus.
"We are the only cruise line that looks at its newbuild program in connection with our heritage. We name our ships after notable predecessors. When we introduce the ms Statendam in late 1992, it will be the fifth ship to carry the name. For generations, these names have assured passengers' safety, comfort and enjoyment," Skinner continued.
The video highlights continuity between the past and present. It shows how, throughout the years, Holland America Line's consideration for passenger comforts led to remarkable ship designs, exquisite interiors and superb service -- traditions which continue today.
The company's history and the romance of the sea are captured through interviews with ship staff, passengers, retired employees, and ship historian Bill Miller.
The project involved 11 days of shooting on location in Vancouver, Seattle, New York and Rotterdam.
The company's role in carrying millions of immigrants to the New World comes to life at Ellis Island. Located several hundred yards north of the Statue of Liberty in New York Harbor, Ellis Island was the destination for 12 million immigrants between 1892 and 1954. It is estimated that over 40 percent of Americans can trace their roots to ancestors who came through Ellis Island. Holland America alone carried some 850,000 immigrants.
In Rotterdam, interviews were conducted at the Prins Hendrik Maritime Museum aboard the ss Buffel, an 1868 iron turret ship. The museum also provided several Holland America ship models, original oil paintings and spectacular pieces of art from the 1938 Nieuw Amsterdam for the taping.
Also featured in the video is the original company building on the Wilhelminakade on the Maas River in Rotterdam. Now on the historic register, it soon will be renovated into a hotel, to be decorated with Holland America Line posters and memorabilia.
Footage also was shot at the city archives, the Gemeente Rotterdam, whose treasures include historic ship photos, captains' logs dating back to 1875, passenger manifests and original Holland America posters. The video also features footage from a 1928 film of the Rotterdam IV's luxury Mediterranean cruise.
