HOLLAND AMERICA LINE'S MS WESTERDAM RESCUES PASSENGERS, CREW MEMBERS FROM YORKTOWN CLIPPER IN ALASKA

SEATTLE, Aug. 19 /PRNewswire/ -- Holland America Line's MS Westerdam was diverted yesterday afternoon from its itinerary by the U.S. Coast Guard to assist in the evacuation of the MV Yorktown Clipper in Alaska.
The 134 passengers and two crew members of the Yorktown Clipper were transferred by tender to the Westerdam; the remaining crew of the Yorktown Clipper stayed with their ship.
The Westerdam resumed its cruise itinerary and arrived on schedule this morning in Sitka, where the Yorktown Clipper passengers were to disembark.
The 53,872-gross-ton, 798-foot-long Westerdam was 12 miles away when it received the distress call from the Yorktown Clipper at 3:45 p.m. Wednesday. The 219-foot-long Yorktown Clipper apparently had run aground and was taking on water.
The Westerdam headed for the scene at top speed, arriving at 4:50 p.m. Two tenders were immediately launched and started transferring passengers from the Clipper ship; several small pleasure boats were also in the area and transferred Clipper passengers to the Westerdam.
The evacuation was completed in 30 minutes and the Westerdam received permission from the Coast Guard to proceed to Sitka at 6:12 p.m.
According to Westerdam Captain Hans Van Biljouw all the Yorktown Clipper passengers "were in great shape." No injuries were reported.
Since the Westerdam was fully booked -- with 1,559 passengers on board -- the Yorktown Clipper passengers were accommodated overnight in the Westerdam's show lounge and had dinner in the Verandah Restaurant.
