HOLIDAY INN WORLDWIDE REPORTS RECORD-BREAKING YEAR Opens More Hotels Than At Any Other Time In Its History

 ATLANTA, Oct. 21 /PRNewswire/ -- In the fiscal year just ended, Holiday Inn Worldwide opened more hotels than at any other time in the company's history, averaging one new hotel every other day.
 The hotel chain opened 159 hotels with a total of 23,064 guest rooms throughout the world from Oct. 1, 1992, to Sept. 30, 1993. This compares to 1966 when Holiday Inn opened 141 hotels and 23,403 rooms for the year, almost all in the U.S. The company's full-service Holiday Inn Crowne Plaza hotels have opened at a rate of nearly two every month for the year, with three Holiday Inn Crowne Plaza Resorts and 17 new Holiday Inn Crowne Plaza hotels.
 Holiday Inn is also aggressively expanding in Asia Pacific, recently announcing plans to develop 30 hotels in Indonesia over the next seven years and 70 hotels in India over the next 10 years.
 "Holiday Inn Worldwide has had a landmark year -- from signing major joint venture deals in Mexico, Indonesia and India, to entering new markets like Austria, the Czech Republic, Israel, and Macau," said Bryan D. Langton, Holiday Inn Worldwide chairman and chief executive officer. "We've taken a number of initiatives to build our business; we are focusing on franchising, investing in technology, and establishing a worldwide sales organization with programo? attract multinational corporations, travel agents and tour operators."
 At the end of September, there were 1,774 Holiday Inn hotels with more than 338,000 guest rooms in more than 50 countries around the world. Ninety percent of Holiday Inn hotels are franchised. During FY1993 in Asia Pacific, Holiday Inn Worldwide signed agreements for the first Holiday Inn Express hotels to be developed in the region. Joint venture agreements were signed with INN Realty Hotel Ventures Ltd. to develop 70 hotels in India over the next 10 years, including some Holiday Inn Express hotels to cater to the domestic market; and with PT Hotel Dirgahayu Indah Raya, part of the Susanti Group, to develop 30 Holiday Inn Express hotels in Indonesia over the next seven years. Holiday Inn Express hotels are limited service hotels geared toward the domestic business traveler and the budget-minded leisure traveler.
 In its Europe, Middle East and Africa Division (EMEA), Holiday Inn Worldwide has added a net 5,100 guest rooms during fiscal year 1993, representing a 21 percent net increase in the system's size. Three new countries, Austria, the Czech Republic and Israel, have been added to the EMEA hotel network in this year.
 In addition, during FY1993, Holiday Inn Worldwide signed development agreements with Senator Group in Germany, Aliance in France, Southern Sun in South Africa, and Queens Moat Houses in the United Kingdom and the Benelux.
 In the Americas, the number of Holiday Inn Express hotels doubled, with 136 opened from 66 the previous year. Holiday Inn Express hotels were introduced just over three years ago. And in Mexico, a joint venture agreement was signed with Grupo Situr during FY1993 to develop at least 10 new Holiday Inn Express hotels over the next two years.
 Holiday Inn Worldwide, which is owned by Bass PLC of the U.K., operates more than 1,770 hotels and 338,000 guest rooms in over 50 countries. Holiday Inn is the world's largest single hotel brand.
