HOLIDAY INN SELECTS MCI TO PROVIDE EUROPEAN VSAT NETWORK
WASHINGTON, April 29 -- Holiday Inn Worldwide has selected MCI Communications Corporation (NASDAQ-NMS: MCIC) to provide a satellite- based network that will link its Western European hotels to a central reservations facility in Atlanta.
The link, the first trans-Atlantic business application of its kind, will allow Holiday Inn to instantaneously communicate hotel room and rate information between North America and Europe through its global central reservations system, Holidex. Initially, the satellite system will link Holiday Inns' 100 hotels in Western Europe and has the potential to connect up to 400 hotels.
The network, expected to be operational later this year, is being provided by MCI under a multi-year contract worth an estimated $35 million.
"Holiday Inn revolutionized hotel reservation systems when Holidex was introduced in 1965, and we have led the industry ever since," said Richard Smith, vice president of information technology for Holiday Inn Worldwide. This kind of satellite technology, in support of Holidex, will help us remain leaders."
Known as VSAT, the small aperture satellite network is the first to provide two-way data transmission between the United States and Europe via Intelsat, a worldwide satellite system.
"Our agreement with Holiday Inn Worldwide is an exceptional opportunity for MCI to demonstrate its global telecommunications capabilities," said Carol Herod, MCI senior vice president for business marketing. "This network illustrates our ability to provide global communications solutions in response to customers' needs and unique applications requirements."
Under the agreement, MCI will serve as the single point of contact for the design, management and provisioning of a turn-key satellite network service to meet Holiday Inn's global network requirements. These services also include data transmission services, coordinated billing and a single invoice for all locations, and trouble management and reporting.
Additionally, MCI will provide support services such as coordination with overseas telephone administrations, securing necessary regulatory approvals, technical operations, network maintenance and centralized network monitoring, seven days a week on a 24-hour basis through its global network management center in Reston, Va.
MCI has selected Hughes Network Systems, Inc., based in Germantown, Md., to provide the VSAT equipment.
Holiday Inn Worldwide currently handles more than 25 million calls each year at its 24 reservation centers around the world. The company recently made announcements that it will be investing $60 million to upgrade and enhance its Holidex reservation system through the development of proprietary software and the addition of ENCORE property management systems in its 1,600-plus hotels around the world.
MCI, headquartered in Washington, offers a full range of domestic and global telecommunications services through one of the world's largest all-digital networks. The company, with 1991 revenue of approximately $8.4 billion, is the second largest long distance provider in the United States and has more than 60 overseas offices in 55 countries.
Holiday Inns, Inc., is owned by the United Kingdom's leading brewer, Bass PLC. Holiday Inn Worldwide is the world's leading hotel chain, with more than 1,600 hotels in 53 countries or territories around the world.
