HOLIDAY INN GARDEN COURT EXPANDS INTO SOUTH AFRICA
JOHANNESBURG, South Africa, Dec. 13 /PRNewswire/ -- Following

its successful introduction into Europe, Holiday Inn Garden Court is to be launched in South Africa in 1992, with at least 10 hotels envisaged to be open by the end of the year.
South African franchisee, Southern Sun Hotel Holdings, intends to develop the Holiday Inn Garden Court brand extension in South Africa through the conversion of existing hotels and the construction of new-build properties.
The first Holiday Inn Garden Court to open will be a 151-room hotel in Bloemfontein in February 1992. This will be followed closely in April by a property on Durban's beach front.
The expansion of Holiday Inn Garden Court hotels into South Africa accords with Holiday Inn Worldwide's stated strategy to have more than 100 open by the mid-1990s.
Southern Sun Hotel Holdings will add Holiday Inn Garden Court to its restructured hotel portfolio, which already includes 17 Holiday Inn core-brand hotels. By the end of 1992, there will be Holiday Inn hotels in all major South African centers.
Ron Stringfellow, group managing director of Southern Sun Holdings Ltd., said: "Southern Suns chose to develop Holiday Inn Garden Court hotels as we identified a distinct need in the market for a hotel offering a high standard of guest room, together with the essential services and facilities required by today's business and leisure travelers. Holiday Inn Garden Court will meet this need, while at the same time providing value for the cost-conscious traveler.
"With an economic recovery anticipated for late 1992, Holiday Inn Garden Court will be well placed to take advantage of the upswing in domestic and international travel. The brand extension has proved highly successful in Europe and we are confident that it will have a similar impact here," Stringfellow said.
Holiday Inn Garden Court hotels are competitively priced hotels of approximately 100 rooms, located primarily in smaller European towns and cities. The hotels are designed to meet the needs of business and leisure travelers who seek modern, inexpensive accommodations with guaranteed standards.
Holiday Inn Worldwide, which is owned by the UK's leading brewer Bass PLC, is the world's leading hotel chain with more than 1,600 hotels and nearly 326,000 guest rooms in 51 countries and territories around the world.
