HOGLAND NAMED CHAIRMAN OF THE BOARD;MURPHY RETIRES FROM GENERAL MOTORS/NATIONAL

MINNEAPOLIS, April 7 /PRNewswire/ -- National Car Rental System, Inc., has announced two key management changes as part of the ongoing restructuring of the corporation.
William E. Hogland, an executive vice president of General Motors, has been elected chairman of the board of directors. Jay Alix, chief turnaround officer at National, will become chief executive officer. They will share the responsibilities previously held by Thomas N. Murphy, chairman and chief executive officer of National, who will retire.
According to Hogland, Robert J. McKenna, who has been running day to day operations at National for the last six years, will continue as president and chief operating officer.
"National has made great progress over the last 14 months, and Tom Murphy played an instrumental role in repositioning the company," said Hogland. "As we enter the next phase of the turnaround, I'm confident National will realize its potential as a profitable, vital contributor to the travel industry."
Murphy, a veteran General Motors financial executive, originally joined National on special assignment for GM in early 1992.
"It's been a fun and rewarding 14 months," said Murphy. "National is a fine company with tremendous people, and I leave confident we're on our way to a bright and prosperous future."
Hogland added, "Bob McKenna and his team are on track and committed to the quality customer service people have come to expect from National."
