 BOSTON, May 24 /PRNewswire/ -- Under power of its 13,000 square feet of sails, made entirely of polyester soda bottles and car fenders recycled by DuPont (NYSE: DD), the Tall Ship "H.M.S." Rose will sail into Boston on May 28 and will berth at the Boston Harbor Hotel.
 Tours will be available to the public on Saturday, May 29, and Sunday, May 30, from 10 a.m. until 6 p.m. with a donation of $4 for adults, $2 for children over 6.
 At 179 feet in length, with her mainmast soaring 130 feet, Rose is the largest operational wooden sailing vessel afloat. She is a replica of the original British 24-gun frigate active during the Seven Years and Revolutionary Wars and was responsible for the founding of the U.S. Navy in 1775.
 Rose's sails demonstrate how DuPont is helping to chart the future of recycling technology. The company produced the sails from 126,000 recycled plastic soda bottles and new recyclable plastic car fenders. The fenders can be found on the 1993 Chrysler LH model cars.
 "Both conventional and leading-edge plastics recycling technologies developed by DuPont were used to convert plastics otherwise destined for landfill disposal into the sails," said Ross W. Fasick, senior vice president - DuPont Polymers and Automotive.
 Three of the company's business sectors were involved in this demonstration project. The Polymers and Automotive group worked with Chrysler to recover the automobile parts and extrude the pellets from recycled plastic soda bottles. DuPont Chemicals used its proprietary depolymerization process to break down molded car fenders into basic polymer building blocks, remove impurities and create recycled resin. The company's Fibers unit spun polyester yarn from the recycled materials.
 The yarn is 100 percent recycled material; no virgin fiber was used. Warwick Mills, located in New Ipswich, N.H., wove the yarn into sailcloth and North Sails of Milford, Conn., designed and produced the sails.
 "Once soda bottles and car fenders, now sails for a tall ship -- this is a dramatic demonstration of the future possibilities that exist in polymer recycling technology," Fasick said. "The versatility of the technology is significant. Of course, economics and market demand will determine when the technology will be justified for large-scale commercial use. But we have demonstrated that post-consumer materials can be effectively recovered and returned to first-quality for use in many markets -- not just the one from which they originated."
 "These sails will power the Rose for years to come," said Richard Bailey, captain of the Rose. After the visit to Boston, the Rose will embark on a tour of the Great Lakes.
 There are opportunities for individuals to sign on the Rose for 3 to 7 day educational sail training voyages.
