Summary: Under the auspices of the Supreme Council for Health, the Blood Donor Unit of Hamad Medical Corporation

Under the auspices of the Supreme Council for Health, the Blood Donor Unit of Hamad Medical Corporation (HMC) celebrated the international World Blood Donor Day (WBDD) on Monday the 14th of June.

This year's celebrations, held at the Doha Sheraton Hotel, focused on young blood donors under the theme "New Blood for the World".

Lending her support of the initiative, Dr.

Hanan Al Kuwari stated: "On behalf of HMC, I wish to thank all those who participated in the success of the blood donation drive which is designed to raise the voluntary blood donation rate in Qatar, especially among the youth.

My gratitude also goes to the Blood Donor Unit staff, as well as other HMC staff involved in the organization of this event, for the diligent efforts they exerted and their dedication to make of this day a landmark success to achieve our vision "Health for All".

Agaib Al-Nabit, the Director of Medical Laboratories, spoke at the event: "Here in Qatar, we have an earnest commitment to the humanitarian needs of our society and this includes a strong commitment by many frequent volunteers who have regularly donated blood.

We have done so well that this year we have achieved a 90% contribution rate from volunteer donors and only had to purchase 10% of our blood supply needs from elsewhere.

This is an increase of 5% from last year's 85% of voluntary contributions -- and our aim is to achieve 100% of voluntary contributions, in accordance with the WHO recommendations.

""Qatar has been celebrating the WBDD annually since 2004 with a range of activities organized by the Blood Donor Unit of HMC and this year again we have our organized related programs designed to highlight the importance of blood donations for our country's healthcare provision," added Dr.

Sidiqa Ismail Al-Mahmoudi, head of the Blood Donor Unit - HMC, underlined that this year's celebrations supported the World Health Organization's (WHO) call to celebrate the occasion and honor the dedicated blood donors who are essential to a well functioning healthcare system.

"We are honoring 360 blood donors at this occasion and are looking to raise general public awareness about blood donations in order to attract more volunteers and develop a culture of voluntary blood donors in Qatar.

Al-Mahmoudi added that the year 2010 has witnessed thousands of donors who generously and voluntarily donated their blood and contributed in saving many lives in Qatar.

This year's achievement represented the highest percentage of blood donors in the Middle East.

"The strategic vision of our unit is to exert optimal efforts to attract more voluntary blood donors in order to secure adequate reserve of high quality and disease-free blood storage in order to offset the need for imported blood from abroad which can be more risky, unsafe and expensive," Ms Al-Mahmoudi stated.

She also confirmed that the intensive campaign drives organized by the Blood Donor Unit through the local mass media for this purpose have been effective, productive and fruitful.
