HIV scare after pupils spit in teachers' meals.

FOUR pupils have been suspended after allegedly spitting into a meal before it was eaten by two teachers.

Both teachers at St Joseph's Academy in Kilmarnock are now awaiting the results of medical tests after eating the contaminated paella.

Police have been called in and a report on the incident has been sent to the procurator fiscal.

Teachers in the school's home economics department had been showing the children how to make the Spanish dish.

The completed meals had been promised to colleagues in the maths department.

When a group of third year pupils discovered who would be eating the paella, they volunteered to deliver it - then each of them allegedly spat repeatedly into the meals.

The teachers involved had eaten the paella before the alarm was raised. Four pupils were immediately suspended.

When it was revealed one of the boys involved came from a family with drug-related connections, the teachers went to their GPs and asked for HIV and Hepatitis B checks.

The results of the tests will not be known for around three months.

The children involved could be charged with reckless endangerment.

A spokeswoman for the school said: "The matter is in the hands of the police so we cannot comment further."
