HITACHI DATA SYSTEMS SELECTS DATA SWITCH AS CO-PROVIDER FOR FIBER-OPTICS PROGRAM

SHELTON, Conn., Sept. 27 /PRNewswire/ -- Data Switch Corporation (NASDAQ-NMS: DASW) today announced that its Fiber Management System (FMS) had been selected by Hitachi Data Systems (HDS) as part of HDS's new program to support customers who are migrating to fiber-optic data centers.
Data Switch will assist HDS in the planning and installation of fiber-optic networks for customers seeking to implement HDS's new, high- speed fiber computer channels. The HDS program, called Technical Assistance Program/Fiber Optics Service (TAP/FOS)(TM), was announced Sept. 7.
"Data Switch will be an integral part of our TAP/FOS offering by helping HDS provide customers with a well-planned, modular approach to moving to the world of fiber-optic technology," said Jim Balassone, executive vice president of HDS. "We welcome this technology leader to our team."
Data Switch President and Chief Executive Officer J. Roger Moody commented: "We are delighted to work with HDS in helping its customers migrate to its new fiber-channel mainframes. Now companies will have a complete package of hardware, software, and services to facilitate the transition to high-performance fiber-channel networking."
The Fiber Management System, introduced by Data Switch in late 1992, has already been installed in 25 data centers by transportation companies, banks, insurance companies, and manufacturing firms that needed a fiber-optic channel network. The Meta Group estimates that the market for fiber, or ESCON(A), channels will grow 300 percent in 1993. That will increase the need for the installation and management of sophisticated fiber backbone networks. The HDS agreement with Data Switch will help to generate additional multi-million dollars per year in FMS revenues, according to Data Switch projections.
Hitachi Data Systems is owned by Hitachi, Ltd. (NYSE: HIT), and Electronic Data Systems (EDS). HDS markets a broad range of mainframe computers, storage devices, and services. Data Switch provides products that interconnect computers and peripheral devices over fiber-optic or traditional copper cables.
Technical Assistance Program/Fiber Optics Service and TAP/FOS are trademarks of Hitachi Data Systems Corporation.
 (A) ESCON is a trademark of International Business Machines Corporation.
