AMERICA has been left reeling again after another gunman went on the rampage on a school campus and shot dead a police officer before turning the gun on himself.

Thursday's bloodbath happened at the same Virginia Tech facility where 33 people were massacred in 2007.

Schools and university campuses have been the scene of some of the worst gun atrocities in history, not only in the US but across the world.

The worst school massacre of all time took place in Russia on September 1, 2004, when Cechen rebels took more than 1,100 people hostage at School Number 1 in Beslan.

By far the deadliest mass killing in US history took place in the sleepy town of Bath, Michigan, in 1927.

Masked and dressed in black, the gunman walked through classrooms killing 14 teachers, two schoolgirls and one of the first policemen on the scene before taking his own life.

The schoolboy killers stormed through Columbine High School in Denver, Colorado, leaving 13 dead and 22 injured in their wake.

The gunmen then shot themselves and their bodies were found in the school library on April, 20, 1999. The pair were said to have belonged to a group known as the "trench coat mafia" who boasted about owning guns and were alienated from the other children.
