BALTIMORE, Jan. 26 /PRNewswire/ -- Ribbon-cutting ceremonies were recently held at the Baltimore headquarters of Pompeian Olive Oil to celebrate the opening of the company's $3 million expansion.
The project included the addition of two new bottling lines, increased warehouse and shipping areas and the expansion of Pompeian's holding tanks -- America's largest storage system for olive oil. Maryland Gov. William Donald Schaefer joined Pompeian President Roy Quinn, VP-Operations Jaan Sulg and VP-Marketing Luis Estupinan at the ribbon-cutting.
The dedication of a 200-year-old olive mill from Spain was among the high points of the ceremony. The mill is a gift to Pompeian from the principals of Hispanoliva, Pompeian's parent company in Cordoba, Spain. Various parts of the mill were discovered in several villages near Cordoba. Considered a national treasure in Spain, careful attention was given to its restoration and shipping to Pompeian in Baltimore for permanent outdoor display.
The granite mill weighs 22.5 tons and sits on a base which is 15 feet in diameter. It consists of two cone-shaped grinding stones which pivot on the base. The grinding process was designed to crush the whole olives into a paste while yielding a liquid of water and oil. Historically, the water was removed by a method of decanting. In principle, the production of olive oil has varied little over 3,000 years. Pressing is still the primary means of extracting the oil, however centrifuge is now used to remove the water.
The historic mill will be a focal point for visitors to Maryland and school tours of the Pompeian plant. A plaque was placed on the mill by Schaefer, inscribed, "Growth Through Knowledge and Peace Through Trade," in recognition of Pompeian's work with area school children as well as the company's presence in the global market.
Eight new 16,800-gallon storage tanks were part of the expansion, bringing Pompeian's holding capacity to 1.5 million gallons of extra virgin olive oil, or nearly 4,000 metric tons. This added capacity allows the company to purchase olive oil in prime lots to ensure consistent quality and a constant supply for the increased consumer demands.
Established in 1906, Pompeian, Inc. is America's oldest and largest importer and bottler of extra virgin olive oil, olive oil products and red wine vinegar with national and international distribution.
