 IN FOURTH ANNUAL HISPANIC DESIGNERS MODEL SEARCH
 WASHINGTON, Sept. 24 /PRNewswire/ -- On Wednesday, Sept. 23, 1992, Christian E. Leiva of Miami and Maria De Los A. Chamorro of Puerto Rico were selected from a field of 32 semi-finalists as the National Winners in the Hispanic Designers, Inc. and JCPenney sponsored '92 Hispanic Designers Model Search. First runners-up to the National Winners were Tom Javier Guajardo Jr. of San Antonio and Theresa Maria Hardy of San Antonio. These announcements were the culmination of Hispanic Designers, Inc. and JCPenney's annual marketing and community relations effort which attracted more than 2,000 entrants and hundreds of participants nationwide.
 Christian E. Leiva, a 22-year-old native of Chile, currently resides in Miami where he is pursuing a career as a comic book illustrator. Maria De Los A. Chamorro Pacheco is studying ecology and marine biology at the University of Puerto Rico. She is 19 years old and dreams of becoming a professional model.
 First runner-up Tom Javier Guajardo Jr. resides in San Antonio where he is a student at St. Mary's University majoring in English Communications. Theresa Maria Hardy, also named as first runner-up, is an 18-year-old dance major at the University of Texas in Austin.
 The winners were selected by a celebrity judging panel including designer Manuel Cuevas, famous stylist Oribe, Ford modeling agent Joseph Hunter, designer Celia Tejada and Ruven Afanador, fashion photographer. The two national winners will also appear in the Hispanic Designers Gala Fashion Show and Benefit in Washington, D.C. held Sept. 24, 1992. They will have a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to meet acclaimed designers like Adolfo, Carolina Herrera, Oscar de la Renta and Manuel Cuevas.
 "The program encourages participants to further their education while providing an exciting introduction to fashion and modeling," stated Patricia Asip, manager of Special Segment Marketing for JCPenney. "A $2,500 scholarship will be awarded to each national winner and $1,500 to the runners-up."
 Additional grand prizes for the national winners include a $1,000 JCPenney wardrobe, a Juvenia gold watch and Ultima II or Lapidus cosmetic/fragrance packages. National runners-up receive a $500 JCPenney wardrobe.
 The 32 semi-finalists were all winners of local JCPenney competitions. All semi-finalists were of a non-professional modeling status, 16-22 years of age and of Hispanic descent. Participating JCPenney markets included Albuquerque, Chicago, Dallas/Ft. Worth, Denver, Houston, Los Angeles, Miami, New York, El Paso, Phoenix/Tucson, Sacremento/Fresno, San Antonio, San Diego, Tampa, Washington D.C., and Puerto Rico. Semi-finalists received a $250 JCPenney competition wardrobe, the opportunity to appear in local JCPenney Hispanic promotional events and a fragrance package from Ultima II or Lapidus. American Airlines, the official Hispanic Designers Model Search airline, provided round-trip flight accommodations for the semi-finalists to Washington D.C. for the final competition.
 The co-sponsor of the event, Hispanic Designers, Inc. (HDI) is a non-profit educational organization dedicated to recognizing Hispanic talent and cultural contributions. Proceeds for the Washington D.C. Hispanic Designers Gala & Fashion Show will benefit the HDI Hispanic student scholarship programs.
