HIRSCHBERG NAMED PRESIDENT OF SIMON & SCHUSTER HIGHER EDUCATION GROUP
NEW YORK, May 18 /PRNewswire/ -- Henry Hirschberg, a 20-year career executive with Simon & Schuster publishing, has been named president of the company's Higher Education Group. Simon & Schuster is the publishing operation of Paramount Communications Inc.
Mr. Hirschberg, 48, has served since July 1985 as president of Simon & Schuster's International Publishing Group, which is based in the United Kingdom. In his new capacity, he will report to Ralph Caulo, executive vice president of Simon & Schuster and president of Educational Publishing. Mr. Hirschberg will continue as president of the International Group until a successor has been named.
Mr. Hirschberg joined Prentice Hall's Educational Publishing in 1972 in Belgium, where he served as a higher education textbook representative covering Israel, France, Italy, Greece and Turkey. Three years later, he moved to the U.K., where he was responsible for northern England and Scotland.
A multi-linguist who is proficient in five languages, Mr. Hirschberg in 1977 was named Prentice Hall editor, responsible for publishing computer and business books. He was promoted to executive editor in 1979 and managing director of U.K. operations in 1982. Three years later, he was chosen to head the company's International Publishing Group.
In announcing the appointment, Mr. Caulo said, "Henry Hirschberg is the natural choice to lead our Higher Education Group, particularly as this segment becomes increasingly driven by technology. In two decades service with the company, he has published a large number of titles for us. Moreover, under Henry's guidance, our International Publishing Group -- which presently publishes some 500 books a year -- has increased sales to $120 million from $20 million, with significant growth in both the U.K. and in Asia."
Mr. Hirschberg was born in Geneva, Switzerland and reared in Queens, N.Y. He attended Queens College, Flushing, N.Y., and holds a marketing certificate from the U.K.'s Institute of Marketing. He lives with his wife, Suzanne, and daughter, Sandra, in London, England.
