ALEXANDRIA, Va.--(BW HealthWire)--March 28, 2000

Providing comprehensive coverage of business and technical implications of the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA), Data Interchange Standards Association (DISA) and the Association for Electronic Health Care Transactions (AFEHCT) will host the HIPAA Conference at the McLean Hilton at Tysons Corner, Va., June 28-30, 2000.

"The overwhelming success of DISA's first HIPAA Conference held last November reflects the rising interest of e-business in healthcare arenas," said Lisa Clowers, Vice President of Public Affairs at DISA. "This conference is tailored to provide executives with the practical know-how to successfully implement the uniform set of standards mandated by HIPAA. EDI (electronic data interchange) used to be a support technology; under HIPAA, it changes the way we do business at all levels and therefore is a business and technical issue. For instance, to do the enrollment transaction the individual is told to see the contract for details, but today the contract doesn't have those details in it. The technology of EDI under HIPAA is going to force a change to the contract and the business process."

During the HIPAA Conference, sessions will offer key components to understanding and implementing the required EDI transaction sets for using the X12-based standards while providing information on the impact this legislation will have on your business processes. A sampling of session topics include:
- Introduction to X12 Healthcare Transactions and Syntax

- Implementing the 270/271--Eligibility Coverage or Benefit Inquiry/Information

- Implementing the 276/277--Healthcare Claim Status Request/Notification

- Implementing the 834--Benefit Enrollment and Maintenance

- Implementing the 835--Healthcare Claim Payment/Advice

- Implementing the 837--Healthcare Claim

- Say Goodbye to Current Business Practices

- HIPAA on the Horizon - What is Yet to Come?

With representation from a cross section of healthcare organizations such as the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, Health Care Financing Administration, Blue Cross Blue Shield affiliations and many others, conference keynotes will stress the importance of forming strategic partnerships in addition to integrating the HIPAA-enforced standards.

"AFECHT's partnership with DISA is a perfect example of a successful strategic alliance," said AFEHCT Chair Rebecca Cowling of Ecom Today. "All the various elements of HIPAA require so many pieces of expertise, and multiple partnerships cover the whole gamut of healthcare and e-commerce."

DISA's partnership with the Accredited Standards Committee (ASC) X12, instrumental in the effort to support development initiatives for HIPAA legislation, complements AFEHCT's mission to promote innovative cooperation and to achieve administrative simplification and cost savings within the EDI healthcare industry.

With the announcement of the final rule expected to occur at the HIPAA Conference, DISA's and AFECHT's conference is offered at a time when users will work diligently to make the two-year-60-day deadline for implementation.

Affecting payers, providers, vendors, monitors of patient clinical data and many others, this industry-wide standardization is expected to eliminate variations on administrative and financial transactions.

DISA's affiliation with the Hotel Electronic Distribution Network Association, EC User Groups and emerging initiatives around the world facilitates an interchange of e-commerce topics hitting the marketplace.

In other international arenas, DISA and ASC X12 serve as the entry point for the United States into the United Nations/Electronic Data Interchange for Administration, Commerce and Transport (UN/EDIFACT), an international standard relating to the exchange of trade goods and services.
