HILTON CALLS NEW MARRIOTT MILES PROGRAM 'POINTLESS'
Hilton HHonors Gives Frequent Travelers What They Want -- Both Airline Miles and Hotel Points BEVERLY HILLS, Calif., April 13 /PRNewswire/ -- Hilton Hotels Corp. today responded to Marriott's announcement of a new airline miles program, calling the Marriott program "the same old stuff in a new package." While Marriott touts the new program as a boon to frequent travelers, the program actually requires Marriott guests to make a long-term choice between airline miles and hotel points. Research indicates that frequent travelers prefer programs such as Hilton HHonors that allow guests to "double dip" or accumulate both airline miles and hotel points simultaneously. "I understand that the new Marriott program appeals first to the infrequent traveler who doesn't fly much," said Randy Petersen, a noted industry expert and publisher of InsideFlyer. "It does seem that those travelers most interested in airline miles also prefer a hotel program that offers both airline miles and hotel points." "Hilton HHonors members don't have to settle for half a free vacation ... they can earn free nights and free flights simultaneously," said Michael A. Ribero, Hilton's senior vice president of marketing. "Both airline and hotel rewards are key for frequent travelers. While Marriott is adding restrictions to their program, Hilton is giving frequent travelers a much faster path to rewards. Our ongoing series of promotions such as our recent triple miles and triple points provides our customers with three times the benefits." -0- 4/13/93 /CONTACT: Marty Gordon or Pat Godefroy of Douglas Consulting Group, 213-252-0427, for Hilton Hotels; or Neil Cohen of Hilton Hotels, 310-205-4545/
