 HIGHWAY USERS FEDERATION ISSUES STATEMENT
 ON SURFACE TRANSPORTATION BILL
WASHINGTON, Nov. 27 /PRNewswire/ -- Highway Users Federation President Lester P. Lamm issued the following statement today on passage of the Surface Transportation Reauthorization bill:
Highway users around the country congratulate Congress for passing landmark surface transportation legislation that will set the tone for redirecting the national highway program well into the next century.
The six-year, $151 billion program establishes a National Highway System and contains other features proposed by highway users to help reduce congestion and contribute to the mobility and safety that American business and industry need to remain productive and competitive.
We acknowledge with appreciation the work of the leadership of both houses of Congress to reach this agreement. Congratulations to the Conference Committee, the public works committees which laid the groundwork, and to Sens. Moynihan (D-N.Y.), Chafee (R-R.I.), and Symms (R-Idaho), and Congressmen Roe (D-N.J.), Hammerschmidt (R-Ark.), Mineta (D-Calif.), Shuster (R-Pa.) and others for their leadership.
Much credit also goes to Secretary of Transportation Skinner and Federal Highway Administrator Larson who worked long and hard with Congress toward this much-needed bill.
On behalf of the private sector, the Highway Users Federation looks forward to working closely with federal, state, and metropolitan agencies to see that the goals of this legislation are met and that the funds are wisely invested.
The Highway Users Federation is the nation's largest private sector coalition promoting improved highway transportation safety and efficiency.
