HHS SECRETARY APPOINTS DEPUTY GENERAL COUNSEL FOR PROGRAM REVIEW

 WASHINGTON, Sept. 3 /PRNewswire/ -- U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) Secretary Donna E. Shalala has announced the appointment of Anna L. Durand, member of a Phoenix law firm, as deputy general counsel for program review in the Department of Health and Human Services.
 In her new position, Durand, 36, has a leadership role in developing legal advice given by the Office of the General Counsel and provides direct supervision and guidance to associate general counsels.
 Before coming to HHS she had been a lawyer since 1985 (member since 1989) with the law firm of Meyer, Hendricks, Victor, Osborn and Maledon in Phoenix.
 Durand's practice concentrated on initial public offerings, business acquisitions, general corporate representation, workout negotiations and bankruptcy.
 Durand is a native of Albuquerque, N.M. She was elected to Phi Beta Kappa at the University of New Mexico where she received her bachelor's degree in economics, summa cum laude, in 1978. She received an M.B.A. from the Stanford Graduate School of Business and a J.D. from Stanford Law School, both in 1982.
 During 1982-1983, she was a clerk for U.S. Court of Appeals Judge Herbert Y.C. Choy in Honolulu, and in 1983-1984, she clerked for Supreme Court Justice Harry A. Blackmun.
 A 1974 U.S. Presidential Scholar, Durand was a Valley Leadership participant and has served as vice president of the St. Thomas More Society. She has worked with the Big Brothers/Big Sisters Program and with the Phoenix Crisis Nursery.
