HERTZ EXPANDS IN MIDDLE EAST; OPENS IN QATAR, ARAB EMIRATES AND BAHRAIN

PARK RIDGE, N.J., April 27 /PRNewswire/ -- A year and a half after signing an agreement with the Olayan Group under which Olayan Saudi Holding Company (OSHCO) became the master franchisee for The Hertz Corporation in the Middle East, Hertz has commenced car rental operations in Qatar. Qatar is the first of several countries in the region in which the company is opening locations this year.
The sub-franchisee in Qatar, Almana Motors, has opened locations at the Doha Airport and the first of two Hertz downtown locations in the city of Doha.
In the United Arab Emirates (UAE) the sub-franchisee is the Al Futtaim Group. They will open a Hertz location the third week of May in downtown Dubai with a second operation at the airport opening shortly afterwards.
By the end of May, a Hertz location will open in Bahrain in Manama city and will be followed by a second location at the Bahrain Airport. The sub-franchisee for Bahrain is Alfa Motors.
Hertz operations in Saudi Arabia will commence in July. The Olayan Group recently acquired Best Trading, which will run the Hertz operations there and will cover all three provinces, with outlets in the major cities and airports of Riyadh, the capital, Jeddah on the Red Sea Coast, and Dhahran on the Arabian Gulf.
The Al Futtaim Group will also open Hertz locations in Abu Dhabi in October of this year and Sharjah in February 1994.
Negotiations are currently under way with potential sub-franchisees in Jordan, Kuwait and Oman.
"Hertz' position as the leading global car rental company is strengthened by our presence in the Middle East," said Frank A. Olson, chairman and chief executive officer of Hertz. "Hertz will serve travelers to and within the region and, importantly, will service outbound demand from the Middle East to other parts of the world. For Hertz, it presents a promising opportunity."
Hertz, the world's largest car-rental company, is represented in over 5,000 locations in approximately 130 countries. Started in 1918, Hertz is celebrating its 75th anniversary.
