HERSHEY'S REDUCED CALORIE AND FAT CANDY BAR INTRODUCED IN TEST MARKET
HERSHEY, Pa., Sept. 8 /PRNewswire/ -- Hershey Chocolate U.S.A., the largest division of Hershey Foods Corporation (NYSE: HSY), today introduced Hershey's Reduced Calorie and Fat candy bar into limited test market areas.
The 1.37 ounce bar contains only 150 calories and 9 grams of fat, a 25 percent reduction when compared with 1.37 ounces of Hershey's milk chocolate which has 200 calories and 12 grams of fat.
"Hershey began researching ways of making a reduced calorie and fat candy bar several years ago," said Richard A. Zimmerman, chairman and chief executive officer, Hershey Foods Corporation. "The technology to produce a good tasting, lower-fat product that meets Hershey's standards of quality was not previously available. While Hershey's Reduced Calorie and Fat candy bar was not designed to taste exactly like a Hershey's milk chocolate bar, we believe consumers who are looking for a lower calorie and fat candy bar will find it to be an excellent product."
The calorie and fat reduction is achieved with some new ingredients and special processing. The product contains Caprenin, a reduced-calorie fat developed by the Procter & Gamble Company, and polydextrose, a reduced-calorie carbohydrate made from natural sources.
Hershey's Reduced Calorie and Fat candy bar is sold as individual 1.37 ounce bars and in packages containing five 1.37 ounce candy bars.
Hershey Foods Corporation is not commenting on the length or location of the test market.
