HERBERT H. DOW TO RETIRE FROM DOW BOARD OF DIRECTORS
MIDLAND, Mich., July 8 /PRNewswire/ -- Herbert H. Dow, vice

president and a member of The Dow Chemical Company's (NYSE: DOW) board of directors, announced today he will resign from his position effective at the close of business, Sept. 1, 1992. This will decrease the number of directors on the board to 17.
Mr. Dow was named to the board in June 1953 and is the longest- serving member of the current board of directors. He was elected a vice president of the company in November 1986 and is currently a member of the Compensation, Finance, and Public Interest Committees.
In accepting Mr. Dow's letter of resignation, Paul F. Oreffice, chairman of the board, commented, "Herb Dow has made many important contributions to the Dow board and its committees over the past 39 years. He has had a long and distinguished service to this company and the board will not be the same without him."
Frank Popoff, president and CEO, paid further tribute. "Dow people around the world -- who, on many occasions have had the pleasure of spending some time with Herb -- understand best his contributions to the company, the board and its committees. I can personally relate to the fact that -- particularly in distant parts of the company -- it means a great deal to Dow people and their relationship to the company to spend some time with members of the founding family."
Mr. Dow joined the company in August 1952 and was assigned to the Midland Division staff that year. In 1954 he was named general manager of Fabricated Products in the Plastics Department and in July 1964 he moved to the Executive Department as secretary of the Executive Committee. He was secretary of the company from January 1968 to November 1986.
Mr. Dow is president of The Herbert H. and Grace A. Dow Foundation. He served as a director for the Detroit branch of the Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago from 1976 to 1982 and as a director of the National Bank of Detroit from 1982 to 1986. He is a member of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (M.I.T.) Corporation and is a member of its Visiting Committees for the Physics Department and Chemical Engineering Department.
A grandson of company founder Herbert Henry Dow, Mr. Dow was born in Midland in 1927. He attended Yale University and M.I.T. He received a bachelor's degree in general engineering from M.I.T. and is the recipient of several honorary degrees, including a doctorate of laws from Central Michigan University, a doctorate in humanities from Saginaw Valley State University and a doctorate in public service from Albion College.
Michael L. Dow, also a grandson of Herbert Henry Dow, remains as the only Dow family member on the Dow board.
