HENKEL PRESENTS NEW GENERATION OF SURFACTANTS
SPECIALLY FORMULATED FOR THE PERSONAL-CARE INDUSTRY
CINCINNATI, March 2 /PRNewswire/ -- In conjunction with the start-up of its new 25,000-metric-ton alkyl polyglycoside surfactant plant at its Cincinnati production facility, Henkel Corp. today presented PLANTAREN(TM) -- a new generation of surfactants specially formulated for the personal-care industry.
"Our PLANTAREN surfactants are based on exciting new chemistry and offer vast formulation possibilities to the personal-care research chemist," said Anthony DeRosa, vice president of Henkel Corp.'s COSPHA Division, which is based in Ambler, Pa.
The PLANTAREN range of surfactants is the first of several new surfactant product lines especially designed by Henkel for specific industrial sectors.
"PLANTAREN surfactants are superb products for a wide variety of personal-care applications, like shampoos, hair conditioners, facial cleansers and bath products," said DeRosa. "They have very good foaming properties in the presence of sebum and combine good foaming and cleaning performance with extraordinary mildness to skin and eyes."
"For example, our PLANTAREN 2000 is a novel liquid product that combines these performance benefits with high activity (without ethanol or hydrotrope), and is very easy to handle in customer production facilities," added DeRosa.
As non-ionics, PLANTAREN surfactants give superior performance by offering the formulation ease of non-ionics, while delivering the improved foaming characteristics of anionics. The non-ionic nature allows the research chemist to use cationic polymers and other cationic active agents to improve performance.
"Our work has shown that PLANTAREN products will improve the performance of conventional anionic personal-care surfactants when used in a composite system," said DeRosa.
PLANTAREN products are based on Henkel alkyl polyglycosides that are made from regrowable raw materials -- glucose derived from corn and fatty alcohols from coconut and palm kernel oils. And they exhibit excellent biodegradability under aerobic and anaerobic conditions.
"With the successful start-up of our new Cincinnati plant, PLANTAREN surfactants are now available in full commercial quantities," said DeRosa.
Henkel's new alkyl polyglycoside production unit, whose start-up was announced today, has a capacity of 25,000 metric tons active per year. The alkyl polyglycoside unit is part of an investment of more than $120 million that also includes a fatty alcohol plant. The fatty alcohol plant, which has a capacity of 40,000 metric tons per year, is scheduled to begin operating in the third quarter 1992.
Henkel Corp.'s COSPHA Division, based in Ambler, provides high- quality chemical products and related services to the personal-care and pharmaceutical industries.
Henkel Corp., the Specialist in Applied Chemistry, provides the right chemicals and services to manufacturers in almost every industrial sector. Based in Gulph Mills, Pa., Henkel Corp. is the North American operating company of the Henkel Group, which is the world leader in surfactant technology. Headquartered in Duesseldorf, Germany, the Henkel Group has sales of more than $7 billion.
