HEMISPHERE'S LARGEST MUM DISPLAY PLANNED FOR AMERIFLORA '92

HEMISPHERE'S LARGEST MUM DISPLAY PLANNED FOR AMERIFLORA '92
BARBERTON, Ohio, Dec. 19 /PRNewswire/ -- Yoder Brothers, Inc. will contribute more than 35,000 garden mums to turn AmeriFlora '92 -- the nation's quincentennial celebration of Columbus' voyage to the New World -- into the largest chrysanthemum display ever seen in the Western Hemisphere.
Set amidst 88 acres of lavish gardens, the thousands of fall blooming plants will assure that AmeriFlora, which opens in Columbus, Ohio, April 20 and runs through Oct. 12, will conclude with a spectacular burst of autumn color.
Designated as "America's Celebration of Discovery," the six-month expo will feature international and domestic exhibits, multi-media attractions and live entertainment in historic, 100-year-old Franklin Park, two miles east of downtown Columbus.
The world's largest breeder and producer of chrysanthemums, Yoder Brothers is the first representative of the flower industry to become a major sponsor of AmeriFlora, the first international floral exhibition ever held in the Untied States.
"Chrysanthemums came to America after Columbus. But like the early settlers who followed his voyage, chrysanthemums prospered in the New World to become our nation's most popular year-around flowering plant," said Ramsey Yoder, chairman of Yoder Brothers in Barberton, Ohio.
"We are proud to join the more than four million other Americans who will attend AmeriFlora and participate in its celebration of discovery."
A discovery led to the chrysanthemum's year-round popularity. By manipulating daylight hours in the greenhouse, Yoder Brothers and others demonstrated how the previously fall-blooming plant could be grown all year long. Greenhouse-grown pot mums have become as popular at Easter, Mother's Day, and other times of the year as garden mums in the fall.
Eight Yoder Prophet series chrysanthemums, including two that are new for 1992, have been designated as official AmeriFlora varieties, Yoder said. From soon after Labor Day until mid-October, visitors to the show will see the greatest array of chrysanthemum flower forms and colors ever displayed. These will include 25 to 30 varieties of Yoder's Prophet series mums -- the first time anything on that scale has ever been done.
Founded in 1921 by Rufus and Menno Yoder, sharecropper greenhouse growers on the O.C. Barber estate outside of Akron, Yoder Brothers enjoys a unique position today. With more than 2,200 employees, the company operates breeding and production facilities in California, Florida, South Carolina, Canada, England and Africa, and markets its products worldwide.
