HELP OUR HAVEN; Prickly pals need your tokens.
LYNNE APPLEBY is hoping to prickle the conscience of Teessiders to raise funds for Hog Haven Hedgehog Sanctuary.
Since 1989 she's taken in more than 1,500 poorly, injured and orphaned hedgehogs.
And running the 24-hour rescue centre, in West Dyke Road, Redcar, is non-stop work.
"It's a round-the-clock job," said Lynne, 56. "You can't get away, even overnight. I haven't had a night away in more than 10 years.
"It costs over pounds 4,000 a year just to run the place and that has to come from donations."
She has swelled the coffers in years gone by through the Evening Gazette's Wish campaign, which gives community groups, charities and other good causes on Teesside a chance to claim their share of pounds 30,000, depending on the number of tokens they collect.
Lynne said: "The first year we came fourth and that was beyond all expectations - the support I got was unbelievable.
"I wrote to every single person who helped to say 'thank you'.
"Then last year we came third, which was brilliant. It was unbelievable. The money was so welcome I can't put it into words.
"A big thank you to everybody who supported us last year."
"This year we'd like to finish at least in the top 10 if we can."
Lynne will use the money to buy a new microscope, which she uses to diagnose illnesses in hedgehogs.
"Whatever is left will go towards an incubator.
As autumn sets in, the number of in-patients at Hog Haven always rises, said Lynne who is currently looking after 36 of the animals.
Recent casualties have included animals that were impaled on railings by warped yobs and others that have been deliberately set on fire.
Some have fallen foul of red rubber bands dropped by postmen.
"Most of the ones who come in are either road casualties or the victims of vandalism," Lynne added.
"The stories just go on and on and on unfortunately.
"But we guarantee 24-hour, round-the-clock attention."
