HELIAN ANNOUNCES ALLIANCE WITH THE PALO ALTO MEDICAL FOUNDATION TO PROVIDE A SHORT-STAY SURGERY CENTER IN MENLO PARK, CALIF. MONTEREY, Calif., April 21 /PRNewswire/ -- Helian Health Group (NASDAQ/NMS: HHGR) announced the Palo Alto Medical Foundation (the Foundation) has joined Helian as its co-general partner in the development of the Recovery Inn(SM) of Menlo Park -- an innovative, cost-effective, short-stay surgical facility. The Recovery Inn(SM) of Menlo Park is an expanded surgery center designed to deliver high quality surgery and post-surgical recovery care at a significantly lower cost. This specialty surgical facility will provide suites where patients will recover for up to several days after surgery has been performed in the Recovery Inns(SM). The patients' accommodations at the Recovery Inn(SM) will more closely resemble a well-appointed hotel suite than a traditional hospital room. Patient suites are private and spacious, enabling a family member or guest to stay overnight. Though it will be licensed as a hospital, meeting or exceeding all hospital regulatory standards, the Recovery Inn(SM) is designed to be as comfortable as a patient's home. The level of medical technology and services will be high, providing twice the national average ratio of nurses to patients. The Recovery Inn(SM) will provide all of this at much lower costs than traditional hospitalization. The Recovery Inn(SM) of Menlo Park is scheduled to open in September of 1992. The Palo Alto Medical Foundation is the non-profit parent organization of the 62-year-old Palo Alto Medical Clinic, one of the nation's largest multi-specialty group practices. The Foundation (established in 1981) combines a health care division of more than 140 physicians with a leading independent research institute and a health education division. Thomas D. Wilson, president of Helian, said, "We are pleased the Palo Alto Medical Foundation has joined Helian as partners in developing The Recovery Inn(SM) of Menlo Park. The surgical specialty Recovery Inn(SM) is a logical expansion of the surgery center concept, providing high quality care and enhanced patient comfort at a lower cost, thus greatly benefitting the local community." Robert E. McNamara, councilmember of the City of Menlo Park said, "We recognize that The Recovery Inn(SM) of Menlo Park will fill a medical need in the Menlo Park community. Also, it will make an important contribution to the type of development we want to encourage in the Willow Road area." Helian Health Group Inc. is a medical service company dedicated to solving the major health problem that confronts the United States today -- namely, lowering the high cost of medical services. To this end, Helian specializes in two modern methods of providing health care: SURGERY CENTERS: Helian operates one of the nation's leading ambulatory surgery centers (Surgecenter of Palo Alto, Calif.) and is developing another surgery center in Northridge, Calif. In addition to having The Recovery Inn(SM) of Menlo Park under development, the company has just completed its Recovery Inn(SM) in Los Gatos. OCCUPATIONAL HEALTH CARE: Helian is the largest provider of occupational and preventative health services in Tucson, Ariz.; Fresno, Calif.; and Atlanta. The company has in excess of 10,000 employer clients and attends to more than 225,000 patient visits per year. -0- 4/21/92 /CONTACT: J.
