HELENE CURTIS ANTICIPATES FLAT SALES AND LOWER EARNINGS IN FIRST QUARTER

CHICAGO, June 10 /PRNewswire/ -- Helene Curtis Industries, Inc. (NYSE: HC) today announced that it expects to report flat sales for its first quarter ended May 31 compared with the same period a year ago and that it expects earnings of between six and 10 cents per share which would be below the $0.26 per share reported in the year-ago quarter and financial analysts' expectations.
"Sales and earnings, particularly in the hair care category, have been adversely affected by reduced consumer demand industry wide and intense competition in a continuing weak economy," said Ronald J. Gidwitz, president and chief executive officer of Helene Curtis. "Despite these conditions, market shares for our established hair care brands are holding up fairly well. Moreover, our antiperspirant/deodorant and skin care businesses in the U.S. are continuing to grow and our international operations continue to remain solid.
"We are taking steps to respond to the changing economic and competitive conditions and believe that we will be well-positioned for future sales and earnings growth," continued Gidwitz. "However, given our performance in the first quarter and current economic and market conditions, we do not expect earnings for fiscal 1994 to reach last year's record annual net earnings of $2.33 per share."
Gidwitz said that although industry-wide sales in the U.S. hair care category were basically flat through the last half of 1992, the company did see modest improvement in consumer demand during the first two months of 1993, only to see the market decline or remain relatively flat in subsequent months.
"In addition, while we achieved our introductory goals for Vibrance, the company's newest hair care brand launched in 1992, results for the brand over the past several months have been disappointing, largely due to these economic conditions and intense competitive pressure," added Gidwitz.
Helene Curtis will announce its first quarter results on June 22, in connection with the company's annual meeting of stockholders.
