HELENA CHEMICAL TO MARKET CROP GENETICS KLEENTEK SEED; CGI GRANTS OPTION TO FORM KLEENTEK PARTNERSHIP

MEMPHIS, Tenn., and COLUMBIA, Md., July 29 /PRNewswire/ -- Crop Genetics International (CGI) (NASDAQ: CROP) today announced that it has granted exclusive marketing rights for its high-yielding Kleentek(R) sugarcane seedcane to Helena Chemical Company. CGI also said that it granted to Helena an option to form a Kleentek partnership with CGI commencing 1996 in return for a substantial capital investment in the partnership by Helena.
"Helena Chemical Company is the major distributor of agricultural products in the Kleentek sugarcane region of the United States," said Todd Taylor, director of business development at CGI. Mr. Taylor said that with the cooperation of Helena, he expects Kleentek sales to increase beyond that achieved by CGI alone. CGI has sold Kleentek seedcane direct to growers since it was introduced in 1985.
"Kleentek seedcane is the best available product for sugarcane production," said Mr. Gary T. Hancock, president and CEO of Helena "and we are excited and pleased to represent the product to our customers." Although the initial marketing efforts will be focused on Louisiana, Mr. Hancock said the agreement between Helena and CGI encompasses other sugarcane growing areas of the United States.
Before CGI developed Kleentek, sugarcane growers used their own seedcane as planting material, which was already infested with yield- decreasing diseases. Disease-free Kleentek results in up to 15 percent greater sugar yields compared to the growers' traditional seedcane. Kleentek seedcane gives growers the opportunity to control plant diseases with the cultural practice of planting disease-free cane. CGI employs proprietary biotechnology techniques and specialized agronomic practices to produce and deliver Kleentek seedcane. The unique product is produced at CGI locations in Houma and Milton, La.
"Helena's expertise in the Louisiana sugarcane market will definitely be an asset to the Kleentek business," noted David Graugnard, general manager of CGI's Kleentek Division, Houma, La. "Kleentek seedcane is a high-quality product that is disease free and high yielding," said Butch Millet, Helena's branch manager at Thibodaux-St. Martinville, La. "This unique product will have a major impact on the Louisiana sugar business at both the mill and grower levels."
Helena, headquartered in Memphis, Tenn., is a major distributor of seeds, fertilizers and crop protection products. The company has annual sales of nearly $1 billion. Owned by Marubeni America Corporation, Helena is also active in international markets as well as turf and ornamental, aquatics, forestry and industrial markets.
CGI was founded with the vision that safe and effective biological solutions could be created for the control of agricultural pests. CGI is engaged in the discovery and basic development of environmentally safe crop protection systems.
