HELEN OF TROY REPORTS YEAR END/FOURTH QUARTER SALES AND EARNINGS
EL PASO, Texas, May 11 /PRNewswire/ -- Helen of Troy Corporation (NASDAQ: HELE), designer, developer and marketer of personal care products, today reported results for the year and fourth quarter ended Feb. 29, 1992.
Fiscal 1992 earnings of $7,167,000 were 55 percent greater than fiscal 1991 earnings of $4,613,000 on record net sales of $120,208,000 versus fiscal 1991 net sales of $116,871,000. Per share earnings increased 67 percent to $1.55 in fiscal 1992 compared to 93 cents per share for the prior year.
Fourth quarter earnings rose 110 percent to $1,184,000 on net sales of $22,059,000 compared with earnings of $563,000 on net sales of $21,145,000 in the year earlier final quarter. Per share earnings rose 108 percent to 25 cents in the 1992 quarter from 12 cents for fourth quarter of fiscal 1991.
Gerald J. Rubin, chairman and chief executive officer, noted that the principal reasons for greater earnings were "increased net sales, minimized bad debt losses, decreased selling expenses, lower interest costs, and elimination of consumer rebates.
"We are especially pleased that these results were achieved in such a difficult retail environment," Rubin added.
Looking ahead, Rubin forecast fiscal 1993 results "will be better than last year" because of increasing domestic sales, full national distribution of Sable, a line of hair care appliances for African Americans, and the company's initial sales into Western Europe. In addition, year-end inventories were down 20 percent from a year earlier and interest savings are expected throughout fiscal 1993."
He reported that "in the wake of successful product introductions at a leading trade fair in Cologne, Germany, and a gala debut in London," the company has opened its European office in Amsterdam and has started distribution on the European continent.
Helen of Troy's primary products are hairdryers, curling irons, hairsetters and other hair care items, including combs and brushes, sold primarily under the trade names of Vidal Sassoon, Helen of Troy and Sable.
