HEILIG-MEYERS ANNOUNCES DECEMBER SALES RESULTS

 RICHMOND, Va., Jan. 6 /PRNewswire/ -- Heilig-Meyers Company (NYSE: HMY), the Richmond-based home furnishings retailer, today reported sales results for the month of December 1993. Net sales for the month increased approximately 20.9 percent to an estimated $84.4 million compared to $69.8 million for December 1992. Sales in stores which were open for the comparable month in the prior year increased approximately 9.1 percent.
 Net sales for the 10-month period ended December 1993 increased approximately 29.7 percent to an estimated $606.4 million compared to $467.5 million for the same period last year. Sales in stores which were open for the comparable period in the prior year increased approximately 12.2 percent.
 Net sales for December 1993 reflect results from the 480 stores which Heilig-Meyers Company operated in 16 states as of Dec. 31, 1993. With the acquisition of McMahan's Furniture Company of Carlsbad, Calif., on Jan. 4, 1994, Heilig-Meyers Company currently operates 572 stores in 22 states.
