HEIDELBERG LICENSES PRESSTEK'S PEARL TECHNOLOGY

HUDSON, N.H., May 3 /PRNewswire/ -- Presstek, Inc. (NASDAQ-NMS: PRST) announced today that it has entered into a modification of its prior agreements with Heidelberger Druckmaschinen A.G. (Heidelberg) pursuant to which Heidelberg will pay $8,400,000.00 during 1993 and license Presstek's newly developed proprietary PEARL technology, under modified terms and conditions.
The revolutionary PEARL technology is capable of producing finished printed full-color materials of a quality that industry experts consider comparable to the highest printing industry standards. PEARL technology is currently under evaluation, test and implementation for present and future products in conjunction with Heidelberg and others. Industry experts believe that this technology represents a significant technological breakthrough in the development of direct computer to plate/press products.
PEARL would allow for the production of non-toxic color printed materials produced without films, or chemistry at the same quality level of full color printed material being produced today using photographic techniques for both wet and dry ink printing presses. Presstek believes that the PEARL technology has applications both as a stand-alone electronic platemaker as well as being integrated into printing presses of all sizes, types and classes.
Heidelberg has committed to pay Presstek during 1993, $8,400,000.00 for engineering services and other fees associated with the implementation of the PEARL technology into various Heidelberg products. Presstek has agreed to supply Heidelberg with retrofit kits allowing Heidelberg to offer the PEARL technology as a new improved version of the previously purchased GTO-DI machines, which were sold using Presstek's earlier spark discharge technology.
Presstek has agreed to grant Heidelberg a three-year exclusive license for the manufacture and sale of a newly developed four-color printing press which will now be using PEARL technology. Certain modifications have been made to the exclusive arrangements under the previous agreements between Heidelberg and Presstek.
Heidelberg has committed to embark on extensive marketing efforts including scheduled worldwide introductions and trade show participation to accelerate market penetration and sales of products, in connection with the PEARL license.
Presstek, Inc. has developed Direct-to-Plate Imaging technology, which was first introduced in September 1991 by Heidelberg, the world's largest printing press manufacturer. The earlier products utilized a spark discharge system to non-photographically etch the printing plates. The new improved-performance PEARL technology uses proprietary laser diodes and a unique optical system which uses a process of partial ablation to etch images directly onto printing plates. This process results in higher resolution producing superior print quality, faster and at a lower cost. Presstek is also engaged in the development of additional products that incorporate the use of its proprietary technology.
