HEC awards scholarships to talented students of FATA, Balochistan.

ISLAMABAD, 01 April , 2009 (Balochistan Times) --The Higher Education Commission (HEC) organized first Merit Scholarship Certificate Award Ceremony here Wednesday and Deputy Speaker National Assembly, Faisal Karim Kundi, distributed Scholarship Certificates to more than 100 talented students from Balochistan and Fata. The awards were distributed under a Project for Provision of Higher Education Opportunities for the outstanding students of Balochistan and FATA under President Directive. Under the project, the scholars will be paid 1st Instalment of the stipend etc. Around 100 scholars were present at the ceremony to receive the award. Faisal Karim Kundi, Speaker National Assembly, the Chief Guest at the ceremony, said that he was very happy to note that this was a fully funded educational opportunity for students of Baluchistan and FATA which covers the tuition fee, living allowance, book allowance and travel and settlement allowance for the students who want to seek higher education in different streams of higher education. He further emphasized that the scholarships are being awarded on pure merit and are not linked to any discipline; and distributed among all the Districts of Baluchistan and agencies in FATA on population basis. Shehnaz Wazir Ali, Special Assistant to Prime Minister on Social Sector and In-charge Higher Education Commission, greatly appreciated the gesture of brotherhood from Cuba, Korea and Austria, who are extending their full cooperation to human resource development projects of HEC. She informed the gathering that the scheme being implemented by the HEC provides for award of 2000 Scholarships i.e. 700 for Masters Program and 1300 for Graduate Studies over a period of seven years. However, the distribution between Baluchistan FATA is in ratio of 60 to 40 percent, she added. The total number of scholarships will be gradually increased each year whereas during the first year there are only 140 scholarships and the total cost of scheme is Rs. 981.486 million; she added. Syed Akhunzada Chittan, Member National Assembly from FATA and Syed Nasir Ali Shah Member National Assembly from Baluchistan also addressed the participants and demanded from HEC to pay more attention to the students of the regions so that they come at par with other parts of the country. They appreciated efforts of the Higher Education Commission towards the promotion of higher education in the country by establishing universities and degree awarding institutions. The public representative also appreciated the merit formula which is independently applicable to the applicants from each District of Baluchistan and agencies and FRs of FATA who have been allocated scholarships on basis of their population strength. Besides Educationists, Heads of various scientific organizations and educational institutions diplomats from Embassies of Korea, Cuba and Austria also attended the ceremony.
