HEARINGS BEGIN AT PSC ON ATLANTA GAS LIGHT COMPANY'S ENERGY PLAN

ATLANTA, March 31 /PRNewswire/ -- The Georgia Public Service Commission today began hearings on Atlanta Gas Light Company's (NYSE: ATG) proposed energy plan.
If approved, the plan will reduce natural gas usage by promoting energy conservation and offering customers incentives to use high- efficiency natural gas appliances.
The plan, called an Integrated Resource Plan (IRP), works by matching the company's gas supply with customers' requirements at the lowest total cost for services such as heating, cooling, cooking and manufacturing.
This plan marks the first IRP prepared by a natural gas utility in Georgia.
The gas company's energy plan contains eight conservation programs, each designed to meet the needs of a specific natural gas market. Plan programs include free energy audits to analyze residential energy uses; incentives to install measures such as improved insulation, double-pane or storm windows, and other weatherization options; and financing for high-efficiency gas appliances. Programs for commercial and industrial energy users will be customized to match the specific requirements of each user. The plan specifically encourages the use of natural gas vehicles as the preferred low-emission alternative to gasoline- and diesel-powered motor vehicles.
Recognizing the importance of all energy sources, the company has proposed the formation of a nonpartisan working group to audit customers' energy needs. The working group's efforts will increase the benefits and reduce the costs to consumers for both natural gas and electric utility services.
More than 453,000 Georgians are expected to benefit from participation in the plan by the year 2002. The plan will encourage greater energy efficiency and result in significant conservation for customers. The plan also addresses the company's load growth and encourages fuel switching from electricity to natural gas where environmental and economic benefits make using natural gas more economic than simply conserving electric energy.
Atlanta Gas Light Company is the largest distributor of natural gas in the Southeast, serving 1.2 million customers in and around 228 Georgia communities. In some areas of the state, the company uses the trade name Georgia Natural Gas Company, and it serves the Savannah area as Savannah Gas Company.
