HEALTHSOURCE TO PROVIDE MANAGED CARE FOR WORKERS' COMPENSATION PROGRAM

CONCORD, N.H., Feb. 5 /PRNewswire/ -- HEALTHSOURCE, INC., (NYSE: HS), a leading operator of health maintenance organizations (HMOs) and managed health care services, announced today that it has aligned with Liberty Mutual Insurance Company in a novel approach to the state's workers' compensation residual market.
The New Hampshire Insurance Department recently awarded the servicing carrier contract to Liberty Mutual. Healthsource will provide case management for in-patient and out-patient care as well as other managed care services for workers with job-related injuries.
The residual market accounts for approximately 30 percent of the total workers' compensation market in New Hampshire. It consists of those employers who have been unable to purchase workers' compensation insurance from the typical commercial market. The impetus for the program was New Hampshire Insurance Commissioner Louis E. Bergeron's desire to reform the state's workers' compensation systems by furthering integrating managed care techniques into the traditional workers' compensation system. This is believed to be the first program of its kind in the nation.
In referring to Liberty Mutual and Healthsource, Inc., Commissioner Bergeron said, "We are very excited about the possibilities resulting from such a combinations of talents. We believe Liberty/Healthsource has created a truly innovative program which is a significant step towards the reduction of costs and the overall improvement of the workers' compensation system in New Hampshire. Ultimately, this change will benefit the business environment in New Hampshire especially the many small businesses which have been adversely affected in the past by the failure of the existing residual market system."
Norman C. Payson, M.D., president and chief executive officer for Healthsource said "Healthsource has for some time been exploring how we could assist public policy makers and workers' compensation insurers in reforming the workers' compensation system. We believe this alliance which combines the strengths of Liberty Mutual, the largest workers' compensation carrier in the country, and the managed care expertise of Healthsource will greatly improve the prospects for affordable workers' compensation in New Hampshire." He added, "The program will be phased in over the next year and we do not expect a consequential effect on earnings in the near term. However, we believe the long term potential for Healthsource is positive."
Healthsource, Inc. sponsors or manages HMOs in New Hampshire, Maine, South Carolina, North Carolina, Tennessee, Indiana and New York and EBPA, the largest third-party claims administrator in New England. Healthsource also provides utilization review services and preferred provider networks primarily to self-insured employer plans and Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Vermont.
