HEALTHSOURCE EXPECTS SECOND QUARTER NET INCOME
 TO RISE APPROXIMATELY 38 PERCENT
CONCORD, N.H., July 22 /PRNewswire/ -- Healthsource, Inc. (NASDAQ: HLTH), a leading operator of HMOs and managed health care services, announced today it expects net income for the second quarter ended June 30, 1992, to rise about 38 percent from the year-ago quarter on a revenue increase of approximately 104 percent.
Net income for the second quarter of 1992 will be between $3.5 million and $3.9 million compared with $2.7 million a year ago. Revenues for the quarter are expected to be approximately $42.8 million compared to $21 million for the second quarter of 1991. Earnings per share are expected to be between 44 cents and 48 cents compared to 36 cents in 1991. Average common shares outstanding were 8.1 million vs. 7.5 million for the second quarter a year ago as a result of the sale of 1.75 million shares of common stock in a public offering in May 1991.
Healthsource's earnings for the current quarter were favorably affected by acquisitions in Indiana and Tennessee, membership increases in its existing health plans and generally favorable health care cost containment results. There were, however, higher medical costs experienced by the company's largest health plan, Healthsource New Hampshire. The medical loss ratio in New Hampshire is expected to range between 77 percent and 79 percent which the company believes on a preliminary basis to be related, in part, to higher intensity inpatient cases during the second quarter.
In keeping with its growth strategy, Healthsource recently announced that it has signed letters of intent to acquire an HMO plan in Maryland, and purchase the assets and assume the liabilities of another HMO plan in Maine through its affiliate, Healthsource Maine.
Healthsource, Inc. sponsors or manages HMOs in New Hampshire, Maine, North Carolina, South Carolina, Indiana, Tennessee and New York and owns EBPA, the largest third-party claims administrator in New England. Healthsource also provides utilization review services and preferred provider networks primarily to self-insured employer plans and Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Vermont.
